Project: Biogenesis of nitrous oxide reductase - a key enzyme in controlling climate change

Supervisor: Professor Nick Le Brun

The chemical reactions taking place in biological systems have always interested me and so I chose to do my undergraduate studies in Biological and Medicinal Chemistry at the UEA. During my degree I completed a summer research project at the NRP using methods that interested me in the field of biophysical chemistry. As a result of this invaluable experience I decided to pursue a career in research, through a PhD.

As a biological chemist my interest lies in the characterisation of unique metal centres found in proteins, in particular those found in denitrifying bacteria. My project looks into the copper cluster biogenesis in Paracoccus denitrificans using tools such as molecular biology, spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.

The DTP PhD attracted me as it offers excellent support to postgraduate researchers by building on professional development during the 3 month internship. I look forward to undertaking this placement where I will be able to develop a new set of skills outside of academia. In doing so I hope to be much more competitive when it comes to applying for my next post doctorate step.

The NRP offers an excellent interdisciplinary environment which is an exciting place for me to begin my research career
