Impacts of algal fibre on our gut microbiome (TODD_U26CASE)
Introduction:
Demand for natural weight loss remedies is exceptionally high. Central Pharma Biotechnica (Biotechnica) mass produce “ALGAFILL,” a seaweed-derived potential weight loss product, rich in active sulfur components with health benefits. However, little is known of these active metabolites, and nothing on ALGAFILL’s influence on humans, their microbiome and health. With CASE partners Biotechnica, this PhD aims to i. profile ALGAFILL’s active metabolites; ii. investigate their impacts on gut microbiota; and iii. characterise key gut microbes metabolising ALGAFILL and their relevance to gut health. Our team offer multidisciplinary training and an award-winning environment for the PhD to yield fundamental insights into a promising weight loss product and support seaweed industry innovation. Additionally, the successful applicant will conduct an industrial placement at Biotechnica.
Methodology:
You will receive training in advanced metabolomics, e.g. nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, to robustly profile ALGAFILL’s active metabolites, focusing on those with beneficial links to health. Using the Quadram Institute Bioscience’s (QIB) state-of-the-art colon models, multiomics sequencing and bioinformatics, you will explore how ALGAFILL is processed in our gut, its effects on microbiome, metabolism, and potentially health. Culture-based molecular microbiology and functional genomics will also be used to study model gut microbes that metabolise ALGAFILL, to provide novel mechanistic understanding of these important biotransformations. Throughout the PhD, you will engage with industry to explore commercialisation pathways for the IP you develop.
Training
You will be based at the University of East Anglia, QIB, and Biotechnica, receiving comprehensive training in molecular biology, gut microbiology, analytical chemistry, industrial engagement, scientific writing, and IP protection. You will develop skills in laboratory and manufacturing practices, present at team meetings and (inter)national conferences, and publish your research.
