NRP DTP Student, Ellie Hyde, receives 2024 British Federation of Women Graduates Academic Award (BFWG)
Ellie, one of our UEA based NRPDTP students, who is based in the Andrew Beekman Group within the School of Pharmacy has been awarded the 2024 Johnstone and Florence Stoney Award for research in “Targeting the protein-protein interactions of transcription factors in cancer with peptides.” The award originates from Florence Stoney, born in 1870, who was the UK’s first female radiologist, founding the X-ray departments in two London hospitals. Florence was an early member of the BFWG since it first formed in 1909.
After being nominated by their supervisor, Ellie was then selected to be invited to interview by the BFWG in London, presenting her research to a cross-disciplinary academic panel who then asked questions on Ellie’s work and assessed applicants based on their academic excellence, research quality and science communication. The panel were particularly interested in the DTP Global Citizenship Project where Ellie ran a stand on peptide therapeutics at the Norwich Science Festival in February this year.
BFWG has been awarding female doctoral students’ academic scholarships since 1912 with the aim to support women in their academic pursuits and encourage them to continue as role models for the next generation.
