Mustafa Emre Gül named as one of 20 most promising young plant breeders in Europe

Mustafa Emre Gül, a PhD student based at the John Innes Centre has been recognised as one of Seed World Europe’s 20 Most Promising Young Plant Breeders in Europe, an elite group of young scientists who represent the next generation driving innovation, sustainability and crop resilience in the seed sector.

Emre is a first year NRPDTP CASE student and an emerging plant breeder and crop genetics researcher. He is pursuing a work linked to hybrid wheat breeding while building bridges between advanced genomic research and practical breeding outcomes. His focus on resilient crops, collaboration, and responsible innovation reflects the future of sustainable agriculture.

Research institutes, universities, seed companies and sector organisations were asked to nominate young professionals who are already making meaningful contributions to plant breeding and crop innovation.

Emre said, “I am truly honoured and this recognition comes at a very meaningful time for me. I was nominated by my late supervisor, Dr. Philippa Borrill which makes it especially personal. I am grateful for her support and belief in me. I will carry her encouragement with me throughout my journey.”

He believes the future of plant breeding will increasingly rely on new genomic techniques and advanced genetics to develop resilient crops with stable yields under climate stress. At the same time, he emphasises the importance of accessibility, collaboration and responsible innovation to ensure that new breeding technologies translate into practical benefits for farmers and sustainable agriculture.

Congratulations Emre.
